WEEK 3: Study Matthew, Chapter 3

This week (September 20 thru September 26), please study Matthew, Chapter 3

If you want to read the chapter online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

Study Tip: Having problems absorbing the text in such a way that you can get questions at practice? Consider getting your family or friends involved. Have them pick up a Bible and pick a verse from the chapter you are studying. Have them read the first half (or little bit) of the verse, and then you try to complete as much as you can. This gets you used to hearing the text the same way you will in practice.

Study Tip: All bible quizzing is done in the NIV's 1984 edition. A new edition was released in 2011 which makes minor (but significant) changes to the text, which our reference and finish-the-verse questions will not support. (If you got a scripture portion from the coaches, it is the 1984 version.) If you should answer a finish-the-verse word-perfect from the 2011 version, it is wrong if it doesn't match the 1984 version. If you have any doubts or questions, please contact the coaches.

BIBLE NEWS: Bible Museum coming to Washington D.C.

The Bible is written by people who were eye-witnesses to the acts of God and His people. Clearly, there is value in seeing for yourself what God has done for you, over the course of history. In this spirit, a new group is looking to build a Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., so that visitors can see Biblical-artifacts from over the years and see recreations of major events in Bible history.
Summers said the traveling exhibit recreates at 80 percent scale the chamber of London’s Westminster Abbey where the King James Version of the Bible was written. A full-scale recreation is planned for the museum.

Steve Green, president of the Hobby Lobby arts and crafts chain and a Southern Baptist, said the museum will feature the history, contents and influence of the Bible but will leave it up to visitors to decide whether to believe the holy book.

“When we present the evidence, I think it’s going to be compelling for somebody to say, ‘Wow, this is a compelling book. I might want to consider what it has to say,’” he said.

PRAYER REQUEST: Pray for the families of 9/11/2001

Please take a moment today to pray for the families of those who died in the events of 9/11/2001.  While the memory may be growing dim for some of us (or some of us may have been too young to remember it at all), a missing family member is always tugging at your heart.

WEEK 1: Study Matthew, Chapter 1

We won't normally repeat this info twice, but it has been a couple weeks since the Kickoff and our first practice is this coming Sunday.  So, if you missed it the first time, here is the key study info.

This week (September 10 thru September 16), please study Matthew, Chapter 1

If you want to read the chapter online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

Click here to download an MP3 of Matthew, Chapter 1.  (Use "monroebiblequiz.com" as the password, when asked.  This link will only work for 90 days.)

If you'd like to read a commentary on the chapter, click here. (Free website, ChristNotes.Com)

If you want to download the puzzle for this week, click here.  (Use "monroebiblequiz.com" as the password, when asked.  This link will only work for 90 days.)

If you want to see the Reference Questions for this week, click here.

If you want to see the Finish-the-Verse (i.e. memory verses) for this week, click here.

Study Tip: For Bible Quizzing, we recommend at a minimum that quizzers read the chapter at least twice each day. This provides a good foundation for studying as the quizzer becomes familiar with the material. It is often good to make this a first-thing-in-the-morning, and a last-thing-at-night event, as that lodges the material in the brain for the subconscious to work on it during your day and overnight.

HUMOR: Stand up, stand up!

Not mine.  Found online.
The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play.
"Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."
During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner."
And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

BIBLE NEWS: A Bible-Based Tablet?

It comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me, but I am an avid user of the Apple iPad. It is not only used for surfing the web and checking e-mail, but also for studying the Bible, taking notes during sermons, and reading Biblical references. So, I viewed with interest the news that a new group is looking to bring about a "Biblical tablet computer" filled with books about the Bible, Christian radio stations, and a "safe" web browser.
The Edifi tablet is a full-colour touchscreen, much like Apple's iPad - but it's pre-loaded with Bible passages, Christian radio stations and free religious e-Books.

The seven-inch Android tablet is $149, and will launch soon in America - and even non-believers might be tempted by its low price.

PHOTOS: Greek Orthodox Church

Our church comes from the Reformed tradition of Christianity. This branch of the faith has largely abandoned religion art in the sanctuary in favor of a much more spare and sparse experience. But some other Christian traditions are very different in this. We visited the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church this past weekend for their Odyssey Greek Festival, and took the chance to see the amazing art on display there. We thought you might enjoy seeing some of the photos. Click on the image below for the whole set. Odyssey Greek Festival (9/1/2012) - 005

HUMOR: Biblical Role Models

Not mine, found online.

A young boy had just gotten his driver's permit and enquired of his father, if they could discuss his use of the car. His father said, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, get your hair cut and we'll talk about the car."
Well, the boy thought about that for a moment, and settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks they went in to the study, where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud. You've brought your grades up, and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, and participating a lot more in the Bible study groups. But, I'm real disappointed, since you haven't gotten your hair cut."
The young man paused a moment, and then said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair and there's even a strong argument that Jesus had long hair also."
To this his father replied, "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"
